Santa Claus may be a mythical figure but did you know that his creation was actually based partially on the amazing Christian man who was named Saint Nicholas of Myra. Saint Nicholas lived during the 4th century and he was born to Christian parents. When he received his inheritance after they passed, he didn’t hesitate to give all of it to the poor. He was known as a very compassionate and generous man and he became a priest at a young age. Just like the mythical Santa, he had a reputation for giving gifts anonymously. And he known for throwing bags of money into people’s homes, oftentimes by throwing it down the chimney. He did most of his gift giving under the cover of night to avoid being spotted. Sounds a little bit like someone else that we know, doesn’t it!
“Santa” is known by many different names throughout the world. Christkind (“Christ child”) was believed to deliver presents to the well-behaved Swiss children while ole Kris Kringle charmed the German children. In Scandinavia, with a little different twist, it was believed that the jolly elf named Jultomten delivered gifts in a sleigh drawn by none other than his goats. Meanwhile, in English, legend says that Father Christmas visited each home on Christmas Eve to fill every children’s stockings with holiday treats. Pere Noel was the resident Santa figure in France and he didn’t waste any time filling the shoes of French children. In the cold land of Russia, the story gets a little sadder. There it is believed that an elderly woman named Babouschka performed an evil deed by purposely giving the wise men the wrong directions to Bethlehem so that they couldn’t find Jesus. Feeling very remorseful after the fact, she tried to find the men so she could undo the damage, but her efforts were to no avail. The story goes that every year, on January 5, Babouschka visited Russian children, bearing gifts that she left at their bedsides, in the hope that one of these children is the baby Jesus himself, and asking for forgiveness. Who would have ever thought that there were so many stories surrounding the Christmas tradition of gift giving?
So look out when it comes to holiday fun because your kids are going to love wearing their very own kids Santa costume. Even the youngest of kids will love the plush feel and the comfort that comes with these costumes. And since there’s so much anticipation when it comes to Santa Claus himself, there will be nothing as fun as dressing up as the guy that they idolize so very much. And let’s face it, nothing looks as cute as a little child all dressed in a red velvet santa suit!
